A Critique Of Still Wakes The Deep
With its many up and downs, Still Wakes The Deep isn't the perfect horror video game, but for many The Chinese Room's latest release still has a lot to offer.
This spoiler-free video examines Still Wakes the Deep in detail to try and explain why exactly that's the case, focusing on its characters, setting, story, atmosphere and gameplay.

Don’t Remaster, Remake

Halo: Combat Evolved’s 2011 anniversary edition promised to deliver a fresh coat of paint to a console classic, an upgrade which would help close the audio/visual gap between it and Master Chief’s later adventures released during the HD era. It wasn’t an altogether successful endeavour, which makes the news that Microsoft may be planning to remaster it a second time a big surprise. It also leav...

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is one of the best games I've played in a good while, with developer Respawn Entertainment packing it full of engaging gameplay that never lets up from beginning to end. Unfortunately, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is also a broken mess of a video game, a title which has been patched many times and yet, more than a year after release, is still not in a particularly good stat...

Really like your points about the construction of halo CE’s story - coming back to play it as an adult I was struck by how effortlessly functional the story is. It’s not groundbreaking, and it’s not intended to be, but it builds a world that can be fleshed out in the future in a story that has very little fat. It means that for players that just want to be pointed in a direction and told to kill aliens, the story is super accessible for them anyway. Meanwhile there’s just enough there to pull in people that want a bit more on this version of the future. And of course it lays a good foundation for the much more detailed world building of games like halo 2 or reach, without limiting any possibilities for future writing.

I think the lack of verticality and so on in sacred icon was a deliberate choice, along with the high volume of flood enemies, to guide you to play the level by running and dodging enemies. Same with quarantine zone for large chunks - I genuinely think the devs intended you to avoid encounters as much as possible. Arbiter has camo and they want you to use it, even as a kid that’s how I played these levels

They should have a regular level and out of nowhere regular enemies start transforming into flood. Turns out the brutes you are fighting were part of the squad from halowars 2 that was exposed to the flood. Since they had a proto gravemind it was smart enough to know it wouldnt win. So it infected a ton of banished but didnt transform them. They just layed in wait. Then you hear over the radio that flood are showing up all over the galaxy. That the entire banished is a vector and every one of them are fkood time bombs.

Halo 3 is the best game, Halo CE can't be number 1 by impact alone. Halo CE has the best music and started it all (i like the Flood plot twist so much) but the level design is terrible, wonky vehicle physics and jumping as well, the Needler is just a very bad weapon (just like the assault rifle) and i hate Rocket Flood so much (also fun watching people get rekt by them).

She died because the Covenant elite hacked their comms and knew where to set up the ambush, and just like the poetism with the rest of the deaths, she was the hacker on the squad.

Halo CE and Halo SPV3 are built on the same game, but have two very distinct visions. CE wanted to create a far more polished and balanced gameplay loop, while SPV3 feels like it’s trying to show off the capabilities of the engine and push it to its limit. The gameplay of SPV3 feels far less like a combat dance, and more like an erratic fistfight. Both are viable ways of gameplay, but they’re also different styles, so comparing the two is like comparing water and oil. And I think SPV3 kinda shoots itself in the foot by being a remake of CE. It really ties itself to the game, and will always be compared to the original, instead of being seen as its own thing. In all honesty I think SPV3 works far better with the Lumoria campaign, since you can kinda look at it in the context of a Halo fangame, instead of a Halo remake.

It’s perfect for what it is and set out to do- a 4-5 hour story/setting driven horror game that leaves you with no answers and a depressing ending. I wasn’t impressed with games like Alien Isolation, but I played through this one in a single seating. Awesome experience. Seeing Caz fight so hard to make it back to his family, only for it to all be for nothing and realizing it at the end was particularly impactful.

Halo Combat Evolved slowly introduces enemies, vehicles, and weapons--and even has the normal/inverted tutorial segment as part of the story. Cortana also looks more military in CE. SPV3 just throws everything at the player at once. If they added the Drones to the tunnels, and the Pillar of Autumn, it'd be a nightmare. I also really don't like how they boxed the AA wraith in with indestructible barriers, or how the force-field preventing access to the next area on Halo just magically deactivates. The SPV3 team could have taken the opportunity to make that tunnel look a lot more like a cave--although to be fair, that line "not a natural formation" worked REALLY well in the early days, when players were looking in the wrong direction.

caz does actually make his own choice when he choice to get roy at the roof, i do have to say things absolutely feel "too" convenient, everything breaks after you've already crossed them with them rarely breaking whilst you are on them, and telephone calls happen exactly when you walk in except for a couple. The yellow paint also feels a bit overdone with the random paint splatters on the path you have to walk or jump when it's already a very linear game, there isnt really any yellow walls or flooring either that'd require yellow paint so it gets confusing where all of the paint comes from. The last thing i want to mention is how linear it is, which yeah i get it's how it was meant to be played, but there are just so many rooms that are unopenable yet it doesnt make sense why, some show that they are blocked and ones like the cabins make sense being locked but normal doors just cant be opened, i know having more explorable areas would cost a lot of time but that many doors just feels off no matter what happens tbh. Also the monster sections feel extremely linear, you're given a large area to sneak around yet there's only this conveniently pathed hiding spots to get to where you need to go, rather than multiple branches, also just something that puts me off a little

To me the game isn't about the gameplay, but it's about the people you meet in the game. People can look at the game for what it is, but for me I was in love with the environment, the body horror and the characters. The game was merely just a vessel for the story and the deliver of everything else. Sometimes a game doesn't have to be everything it "should be" to sell the message of the story, or to make you attached to the characters, or to feel the weight of the hopeless situation caz is seen struggling through. The environments are wholly unique in every portion of the map, it's wrought with immense detail, every part of the game is wholly unique and independent from one another, there's brilliant story telling that mirrors the moments in the intro segment of the story. I don't think every story must follow a strict narrative recipe to be good, and I certainly don't think that should be the case for this game either. People loved tattle tale's the walking dead because of the characters, not for its"gameplay" I genuinely cried through a lot of the emotional moments in the story, it made me feel something, and that's what matters ultimately. I only have one complaint: I wish I could've been given the choice to somehow save everyone on the rig, but I believe to some extent that wouldnt've worked out at all for the people on the mainland. It's evident that our trio of survivors were sick with whatever this *thing* was that had killed all their co-workers from the very beginning. I believe a single ending communicated the hopelessness of the situation much better than 3 or 2 different endings would've, it made the overall conclusion of the situation sit just that much heavier on the soul. Another thing I wanted to mention was "The lack of agency" If you were given a ton of agency in the gameplay to do as you pleased the player the game's story would've lost its potency, the story would've taken a backseat as you went on expeditions throughout the rig. And don't get me wrong, that sounds fun as hell, but I don't think this is the kind of game that needs that when the story itself and the immersive environment is meant to be the main appeal to the game.

When inevitably another walking sim releases I often think to myself - why wasn't that a movie instead? Still Wakes The Deep could be a movie. In my opinion it should've been. It's not that this game doesn't have survival horror tropes or gameplay elements we've come to expect of horror genre. It's that the game has none of the characteristics that would prohibit it from being something else. The only benefit of Deep being the game is the ability to walk around the rig in your own pace. But every gameplay element makes this experience less enjoyable. Every surface the player needs to interact with is covered in yellow paint, the player can't find or determine a single thing for themselves. Every corner you turn the yellow paint meets you, even when the path is a straight tube. And the path is absolutely always a straight tube. Often shamelessly so, with blocked doors all around. Climbing actively contributes to players carpal tunnel syndrome, with how it forces to hold the button. Game has not more than 10 QTE specific animations and they keep repeating over and over and over again. Grunt over that ledge, spin another big yellow valve, hold the button while you ascend the stairs, reorient yourself while nearly falling. Monsters are extremely dumb and easy to juke except for the scripted chases, but there the player is always forced into a single corridor. There are a few situations where the monster could easily get the player in a nearly open "hiding place" or simply having an open door between them and the player. But game logic forces the monster to never do so. I don't feel rewarded by driving Caz on his journey. I feel hindered and bored each step of the way. The "gameplay" keeps me away from great atmosphere, voice acting and environments. And if the game is great in every aspect but the gameplay - it could've been a movie.

Seems like they looked at SPV3 and thought the best plan would be to copy it. I think replicating and expanding the original game is a great idea, you could add additional levels for the Chief, Split Jaw, Arbiter and maybe the ODSTs… for example, missions including setting up, defending and evaking alpha base, the Covie’s perspective on the flood and forerunner tech (similar to the excellence of Quarantine Zone) and the ODSTs ending Truth and Reconciliation

I think Halo CE was and still is amazing, but despite all of its triumphs and ground breaking qualities IMO it has some of the worst level design of the series and when I say this, I don't mean set pieces nor the early levels but the latter ones are some of the least fun I've had in halo (the maw specifically because of how mazelike the structure is, playing cornhole with grenades to destroy the engine and how annoying the sentinels are, but it does have decent escape section.) Not including 343 titles the Prometheans are horrible and halo 5 should stay at the bottom and one point of quality I don't see mentioned about halo 5 is it being by far the least accessible of the series being an Xbox exclusive even today halo 4 was better than most people give it credit for but the Prometheans being as annoying as they are bogs it down significantly. When it comes to halo i find that people will most commonly put the one they played first as the favorite (I'm no different) and I think that is ultimately a good thing because none of the games really aged badly and a 23 year old gaming still being a worth while play truly does show how good the series itself is.

But his death is not deserved, especially since he stopped running from problems and went back for Roy's insulin. Those facts together should have been enough to spare him a gruesome fate (at least in this game).

A lot of additions are cool if you've already experienced the game and are like "what if we had this", such as the presence of more enemies like Brutes and weapons like the BR and SMG, as well as suppressed versions on TnR, but I think they can be overwhelming. Plus the levels seem to be very long compared to CE (which already can be decently lengthy for FPS missions). I don't like some of the encounter design compared to CE, definitely seems very busy and not as well paced as the base game. I think this just goes to show that CE is an absolutely GOATed game that has 100% stood the test of time and Bungie are geniuses for making it.

They said they would remake not remaster CE. Many think they are remaking it by adding in things that couldn’t be added because of time constraints or weren’t in the lore yet

I totally agree about how the Forerunners should have remained mysterious. I know they will likely not back-pedal on this lore, but I do not like the "humans were an ancient space species that then got devolved" lore. The original trilogy only really implied that humans were to succeed the Forerunners, (EDIT: Or were their descendants. I guess I briefly forgot that that was implied too), forming a more organic and natural progression. I liked that a lot more than the Forerunners getting mad that the Precursors chose humanity to inherit the mantle and stealing it for themselves and basically causing the Flood in the process.

It can be a tad frantic at times! Would like it to be easier to push into certain areas rather than being trapped at the entrance.

Many years ago I had a rather unusual and unique experience when I played this level on legendary and it was when I was on the bridge where echo 419 was shot down by the bridge where she was meant to pick us up that the banshees turned around and made a pass back at me and this is the unusual part, they both hit me with the banshee bombs as I was driving away with my warthog that I was knocked off it and then the warthog ended up plummeting into the abyss below. I was basically left alone on the bridge with both banshees shooting at me on both sides that I had no choice but to run back into the place that I came from and then I made a rather interesting discovery. Apparently there was a hidden warthog just beneath the platform that you came from that connected to the bridge that bungie had put there just in case you and I managed to jump in it and drive all the way to the launching area where the long sword fighter was docked with just seconds to spare. I wish I could have recorded that moment because no one seems to believe me when I tell them that there’s a hidden warthog in the area where foe hammer gets shot down. It truly shows how much detail bungie put into this game when they first made it.
